Course Overview
This immersive point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) course is designed for hospitalists and clinicians across specialties who want to build practical, bedside ultrasound skills that translate directly into patient care. Beginners are welcome, and no prior POCUS experience is required. Learners will be cohorted by experience level, ensuring that those with prior coursework or scanning experience will also find the course highly beneficial.
Developed by experienced hospitalist educators, the course emphasizes the highest-yield POCUS applications for inpatient and acute care settings while welcoming a multidisciplinary audience.
Participants will learn core POCUS principles, image acquisition techniques, and clinical applications through a blend of focused didactics and hands-on scanning sessions. Expert faculty, many of whom have completed national CHEST or SHM certificate programs and teach advanced ultrasound courses, provide individualized instruction in small-group settings.
Hands-on sessions are the cornerstone of the course, offering extensive practice on live models to develop proficiency in cardiac, pulmonary, abdominal, and lower extremity ultrasound exams. With a low learner-to-faculty ratio, participants receive real-time feedback to refine technique, improve image interpretation, and build confidence.
Lectures complement the hands-on experience by reinforcing key concepts, including indications, clinical integration, and decision-making using POCUS. The curriculum has been refined over time to maximize efficiency, relevance, and immediate applicability in clinical practice.
This course also contributes toward the SHM Certificate of Completion Program, supporting clinicians in advancing their POCUS training and professional development.
